Innovative app prototype launch hints at a future of contactless travel

London, | minute read

European consultancy and digital services leader Sopra Steria has today unveiled an innovative prototype app demonstrating the future of frictionless, contactless international travel.

Launched at the high profile Home Office Security & Policing 2021 conference which starts today, the UK eTraveller App has the potential to transform traditional borders and immigration processes. The app demonstrates how passengers could securely complete their Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) from the comfort of their own homes, at a time which suits them.

The UK eTraveller app, which doesn’t capture any data in its prototype form, presents the future of remote identity verification through passport scanning, facial recognition and fingerprint enrolment all from a user-friendly smartphone app.

The three verification checks creates a unique digital record of the passenger’s identify that can be sent to the appropriate government authority to authorise travel. The passenger will receive their ETA confirmation in the app and can use this to travel seamlessly across the border.

Experts at Sopra Steria say that the potential benefits include enhanced security of the UK’s borders via improved and earlier identify checks and better targeting of high-risk cases,  a seamless passenger journey, improved biosecurity and reductions in health risks for passengers and personnel.

The model will be launched and available to try at the Security & Policing event taking place from 9-11 March 2021 and will demonstrate how a future of digital, frictionless borders could be realised once the technology is in place.

Richard Thompson, Digital Identity Consulting Manager at Sopra Steria, said; “This prototype brings to life what the future of frictionless travel could look like for travellers and security personnel. We are not far off unlocking the potential of biometric smartphone technology and once this is fully developed, the passengers are set to reap the benefits. A passenger’s digital identity will be captured on this app and can travel with an individual on their mobile device, enhancing security, minimising fraud, reducing costs and providing more joined up, effective and efficient government services.”

Security & Policing is the official Government global security event, offering a world-class opportunity to meet, network and discuss the latest advances national security and resilience with UK suppliers, UK Government officials and senior decision makers across law enforcement and security from the UK and overseas.

Sopra Steria’s aim is to work with clients to enhance the security of the UK border and improve the immigration experience for passengers.
