We are proud to be in the top 1% of companies for our work tackling climate change and managing our carbon emissions and a crucial part of this is being certified CarbonNeutral® for business travel, data centres and office.
Being certified CarbonNeutral® for business travel, offices and data centres means that the climate change-causing emissions we emit through those aspects of our business are offset in sustainability projects that meet global standards, effectively making us "net zero" for greenhouse gas emissions from those sources.
We have recently become one of the first companies in the UK to move to green gas for our UK gas consumption, procuring Green Gas Certificates. This has allowed us to further reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by using renewable, lower-carbon power from biomethane. We have already reduced greenhouse gas emissions significantly and will continue to do so against the challenging science-based reduction targets it has set itself.
We don't just offset our emissions. We are also reducing them. By reducing business travel (using technology to conduct more of our business remotely), making our data centres and offices more energy efficient, and investing in electricity from zero-carbon, renewable sources, we have reduced our Group emissions each year. Last year we achieved a 40% reduction in our emissions.
Objectives and progress
We maintain objectives for each of the four pillars of our sustainability programme.
We also use the global standards of best practice to help us set stretching targets that will make a meaningful difference. For example, we have aligned our sustainability programme to UN Sustainable Development Goals, and set official Science-based Targets for further reducing our greenhouse gas emissions.
Standards and Frameworks
In 2017 we committed to implementing the recommendations of the Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures. Along with 9 other leading companies, we will be disclosing information about the financial implications of climate-related risks and opportunities to understand how their business can adapt to a changing climate and exploit the opportunities that the low-carbon economy is already creating.
Science Based Targets
A partnership between CDP , WRI, WWF and the UN Global Compact, the Science Based Targets(SBT) initiative works with companies to set ambitious emission reduction targets. Sopra Steria is one of 200 companies worldwide who are officially committed to SBT and currently in the process of achieving this.
Sopra Steria has committed to set long term emissions reduction targets consistent with the global effort to keep temperatures well below the 2-degree threshold and aligned with the key goal of 2015 Paris Agreement (COP 21).
UN Global Compact and Development Goals
We are a signatory to the UNGlobal Compact. By this commitment, we uphold the 10 principles of the Global Compact concerning labour rights, protection of the environment and the fight against corruption.
Our sustainability programme is aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), these cover a broad range of social issues like poverty, hunger, health, education, climate change, gender equality and social justice. They underpin all the objectives that we set across all of our sustainability work streams – Community, Environment, Marketplace and Workplace.
For example, our work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the value chain – from our own operations, in services to customers and throughout our supply chain – contributes to the Sustainable Development Goal for climate change
