Background: the digital workplace of the future

Yara is a global leader in crop nutrition and ammonia with a mission to responsibly feed the world and protect the planet.

Yara works actively to build and facilitate the digital workplace of the future for its employees by investing in the ‘Digital Workplace Experience’ (DWE) team. The DWE team will raise the level of digital competence to ensure a high-quality digital user experience for all employees globally. The goal is to have a skilled, efficient, and engaged global workforce, enabled by a digital workplace that empowers people to perform at their best.

Yara needed team resources with experience in:

  • Microsoft 365 (M365),
  • Change management,
  • Training activities,
  • User adoption,
  • End user communication,
  • Insight and mapping work,
  • UX and service design, and
  • Workshop facilitation.

The team belongs to the ‘Digital Technology’ department and works closely with Yara's HR and communications department and sees the benefit of working at the intersection of IT, communication, interaction, and training.

What value did this create for Yara?

Yara's end users benefited greatly from continuous training, end-user information, and improvement of the digital working day at Yara. They have gained strong digital skills and competence and use the tools in line with Yara's guidelines and collaborative culture. They have gained a better experience of the digital workplace, along with access to resources and training materials to support their digital ways of working.

A vibrant M365 Champion network at Yara provides long-term value and ensures that the digital platform continues in a sustainable way.

Learning is elevated to a new level, and Yara is left with a competent foundation that ensures a digital workforce going forward. IT services will also be simplified and consolidated, while Yara as a company will become more agile and flexible. In addition, the workforce becomes more efficient, mobile, and generally more satisfied. Yara also reduces risk, increases safety, and ensures compliance with regulations and societal requirements.

What did Sopra Steria contribute?

Sopra Steria has led the team since April 2020 and has been primarily responsible for several initiatives that help all Yara employees improve their digital skills. Here are some examples:

Digital workplace learning hub

Establishes and further develops Yara's global training portal for learning about digital tools at Yara. The portal is SharePoint-based, with learning material available there. We also support Yara's LXP platform (learning platform).

Engage

Helping users adopt Yammer. The goal is to establish a channel for better networking, communication and knowledge sharing globally.

Digital work-life

From hire to retire, conducting an insight phase to map Yara employees' digital working lives. We develop concepts for improvement, in the short and long term. Yara's digital competence level is mapped through an annual survey, and the concept ‘The Yara way of working with digital tools’ is in place. It gives all employees a common understanding of how we interact and communicate at Yara.

M365 Champions Network

The network was established in the autumn of 2020 and now includes 165 enthusiastic and knowledgeable Champions from 30+ countries. It plays an important role in raising awareness, encouraging adoption and building digital skills across the organisation. The team continues to develop and maintain the network, supporting members through training, guidance, and facilitation.

User adoption and communication

Includes over 60 webinars each year and the production of learning articles and instructions in several languages. Supports more efficient use of M365 tools across Yara. We conduct continuous training via webinars, preparation of news articles, tips and tricks, and have the main responsibility for end-user information when new and existing IT solutions are rolled out.

Facts

  • The target group is Yara's 16,000 employees in 60 countries, ranging from IT people in Norway, via field agronomists in India, to auditors and factory workers in Brazil.
  • The work takes place in cross-functional teams with a daily working language in English.
