Sopra has worked as a transformation partner with the NHS Practitioner Services Division for over 12 years. In conjunction with Atos, we have designed, developed and built the pharmacy claim processing systems that allow Practitioner Services Division to manage, process and pay community pharmacists for dispensing around 8 million prescribed items monthly.
Our ePharmacy solution, not only provides patient safety benefits, but also utilises an electronic messaging system to automate pharmacy payments. Electronic messages containing details of dispensed items from community pharmacists are received daily and, where appropriate, processed automatically (without operator intervention). Automation was first introduced in February 2010 and since then has increased to over 50% of all payments of prescriptions; this has delivered both more accurate payments and substantial cost savings for NHSScotland in a climate where claim volumes are rapidly increasing in line with the government's introduction of the zero patient charge for pharmacy prescriptions.
Major success milestones for the ePharmacy programme In Scotland:
- The 'one billionth' electronic message has recently been processed through the ePharmacy message store
- Over 50% of all prescription payments to Community Pharmacies are now being processed via the fully automated 'ePay' solution
John Bailey, Sopra's NHS Scotland Delivery Director said: "Scotland is leading the way in the UK through delivering an improved service for pharmacists and the citizen. Our mantra at Sopra is to deliver technology-enabled change programmes which represent value for money. We are delighted with these significant milestones and wish to extend our thanks to all parties who contribute to the continued success of the ePharmacy programme."
