In January 2015, two Sopra Steria Graduate Consultants will be heading off to India to take part in the Rickshaw Run! A 3,500km pan-Indian adventure in a 7 horsepower tuk tuk/glorified lawnmower.
"No set route, no back-up, no way of knowing if you're going to make it. The only certainty is that you will get lost, you will get stuck and you will break down".
The 2000 mile journey from Cochin to Jaisalmer, will be a test of wills and ingenuity for all of the teams involved as they have no assistance whatsoever on their way!
Finding their own route, fixing their own breakdowns and locating their own accommodation are just a few of the challenges they will meet on the way. The Rickshaw Run is easily the least sensible thing to do with two weeks.
Why are they doing this? Well it's not just for the adventure, the real point of the challenge is to raise money for Cool Earth who work alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction. Money raised by team 'Tuk's Away' will also go towards two local Sopra Steria office charities, LifeCare and Solidarity Sports.
It will be a once in a life time adventure for all of the participants, but remember that there are real risks involved. The roads can be treacherous, there are 140 million vehicles in India and 45 million cows and 30,000 elephants to avoid! The Rickshaws are highly unsuited for rough terrain or a journey longer than 5 minutes!
How to donate
Sopra Steria will be supporting our colleagues in the lead up to their adventure and will keeping an eye on them while they are away using our expertise in GIS technology, but you can also show your support by donating through Virgin Money.
