NBCUniversal is one of the world’s leading media and entertainment companies. They create and distribute world-class content across a portfolio of film, television and streaming.
In the UK several well-known titles have been brought to our screens by NBCU. A recent example is Apples Never Fall, based on the novel by Liane Moriarty, on BBC One and iPlayer. Apples Never Fall is an example of evolving screening strategies and behaviour, even just 10 years ago it was almost unthinkable that a broadcaster would make an entire series available to viewers at the same time.
Episode 1 of Apples Never Fall aired on BBC One on 21st September 2024, with each subsequent episode stripped weekly. However, also on 21st episodes 2-7 were made available on iPlayer. With viewers now able to effectively create their own viewing schedule, rather than have it dictated to them, it is imperative that there is an easy way of accessing and understanding how they choose to watch content and when.
Challenge
NBCUniversal need to quickly understand how their content is performing across the different UK channels, portfolios, and streaming platforms. Traditionally this has been served by the daily receipt of static Excel deliverables in a standardised format which are distributed widely around the business. This form of deliverable includes fixed data points and reflects data delivery mechanisms that have not kept pace with the changes in media delivery, which has evolved dramatically since Barb first started measuring viewing in the 1980s.
TRP Research and Sopra Steria recognised this juxtaposition in data and delivery. We developed a vision for a one-stop portal providing company-wide access to media data in a self-serve, accurate and intuitive manner.
Solution
AudEx Visualise was implemented to modernise the distribution of overnights ratings to key NBCU teams in the UK, with the interactive schedule widget allowing users to review content performance holistically. Viewing is shown in a standard grid format, but users can select to review the previous day’s viewing or assess consolidated figures, via the various drop-down options available. Users can switch between a ‘schedule view’ and a ‘day of week view’ to understand a channel’s performance by day of week or in a competitive context. Services are also reflected in an ‘as-viewed’ format which allows viewing from traditional broadcast services to be compared with Subscription Video on Demand streamers.
NBCUniversal is an early adopter of AudEx Visualise, which helps their teams review increasingly complex media consumption behaviours. Users have reported they no longer need to rely on outdated Excel reports and are embracing the new service delivery.
