Over the next ten years the number of people over 65 will increase by 4.4 million. The Health Foundation forecast that this demand is equivalent to an addition 21,000 to 37,000 beds.
This presents a sustainability challenge for the NHS, and highlights the importance of looking at how technology can help to reduce some of this.
Accelerating the adoption of virtual wards and hospital at home as a key pillar for improving productivity and patient flow, and the evaluation of virtual wards have demonstrated that they have a significant positive impact both for patient outcomes and releasing bed capacity.
