Sopra Steria has been shortlisted in the Responsible Business 2019 awards, the UK’s longest running and most prestigious awards programme, championing sustainable business.

Amongst more than 200 entries, the company has been selected as one of four finalists in the Connected Places category for its work at Harrow Council.

Over the course of the contract, Sopra Steria will have delivered more than 200 initiatives that help local people, charities, businesses and the environment, including:

  • Helping elderly people stay connected to family and friends by teaching them basic digital skills. One woman in her 70s worked with Sopra Steria volunteers to learn how to send emails, attach and open photos of her family, and find information she needed online. This has helped her to stay in touch with her family and friends who are living around the world. She is a repeat customer at Sopra Steria’s digital skills surgeries in Harrow and loves to stay and chat with the company’s staff.
  • Supporting local people with employment advice, work experience and apprenticeships. Two current Harrow apprentices are going from strength to strength and moving into higher level apprenticeships. One man who completed a two-week work experience placement with the company went on to find his first stable employment, working for a neighbouring council after years working at low pay and during unsociable hours.
  • Investing in local businesses by spending more than £250k with them and offering seed money and mentorship. The 2018 winner of the Sopra Steria-sponsored Harrow Business Den, Earth to Earth Organics, a skincare company, used the company’s investment to purchase critical production equipment, going on to become profitable for the first time within a year after the event.
  • Giving learning opportunities to local schoolchildren from disadvantaged backgrounds: Sopra Steria volunteers have worked with hundreds of local schoolchildren, with a focus on underprivileged kids. This Spring, 20 Sopra Steria employees are coaching teams of schoolchildren through a month-long competition to create real-life solutions to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. They will go on to a Dragon’s Den-style competition, pitching their ideas to a panel of judges from Harrow Council and Sopra Steria. The winning teams will have the chance to visit the Houses of Parliament and earn a learning experience in Sopra Steria’s DigiLab experience in London.

Through this work Sopra Steria is also helping the Council achieve their sustainability and social value objectives.

Sopra Steria’s sustainability and social value programme in Harrow is a demonstration of their genuine commitment to having a positive impact through their business and to helping us achieve our own social value objectives. It has been a real high note in our relationship.

Carol Cutler, Director of Customers Services and Business Transformation at Harrow Council

This work is a demonstration of our Government sector strategy in action: empowering Government to make a difference to everyone every day.  I would like to thank everyone involved at Harrow for the part they continue to play in driving and delivering our sustainability programme there.

Adrian Fieldhouse, Managing Director Sopra Steria Government Sector
